As Gentlefoot says, start with camber and tyre pressure. A lot of hotlapping setups have a lot of camber (maybe 4 degrees). For the FZR, I have found about 2-2.5 to give even temperatures in most cases. And for tyre pressures (using R2s) I usually leave the fronts around 20psi, but need to put the rears up to 27psi to help them last. It'll be different for the other two due to the different weight distribution (keep the pressures more even front to rear). Generally I find R2 with more pressure to still be quicker than R3 with lower pressure, and this is what other people have told me they find as well. Just play with camber and pressure until you're not cooking the tyres and then go from there...
When they are working okay, there is nothing wrong with the DFP pedals. They are not great, but they do the trick. But they have a lot of reliability problems. I'm sure a search would show a lot of unhappy campers due to the pedals. The Microsoft pedals are better, and if you can find the web page detailing how to rewire a set of Microsoft pedals to work with the DFP, they will be more pleasant to use and (in my experience) very well lasting.
Good point I was mainly trying to clarify the misinterpretation of the "three blue flags and you get a black flag" rule that is used in real life. But of course in real life this only happens if the car behind you is a lap ahead and gaining on you. Hopefully if/when flags are improved, this problem in LFS will be addressed.
With the three blue flags rule, this is a rule in F1, but it does not mean 3 blue flags in a race... it means that if you pass three blue flags while you are driving and haven't let the car behind you pass by the third one, you will get a black flag... By this time you may have done say half a lap of a track, which is plenty of time to let someone by.
I used to play GPL a lot, but more recently I've only been playing LFS. I tried out the demo for RBR and enjoyed it, but not quite enough to purchase it. Not sure why I haven't bought it really.
I had the same problem using FProt, as it automatically deleted the file, but on this program there is a setting to have a pop up asking you whether you wanted to continue, as Scawen mentioned here.
That about sums it up Yes, the devs could have made a average game in much less time by taking the usual shortcuts, but instead they have taken the time to do things as well as they can. Of course it takes longer, but the extra time and effort is clearly paying off in terms of the quality of the sim.
Nice idea. I managed to get down to a 35.52 with no cones in the FOX. I'd imagine some of the hardcore FOX guys could get under 35. I'm off to try the MRT next...
Nice layout It's fun, but the only thing I found was that it's hard to see where you're going with the tall barriers at the edge, so you're driving 'blind' most of the time. Perhaps there is something else you could use that we could see over a bit more easily so be able to look ahead? Or perhaps just keep that in mind for the next one! But it's fun, thanks for posting it.
The DFP wheel itself is decent, not had any problems with it and have enjoyed it a lot. For pedals I picked up a couple of sets of microsoft pedals from ebay and rewired them to work with the DFP. I can't find the link now, but there are instructions online for matching up the wires etc. They are quite a bit sturdier than the DFP pedals, have better range of motion, and most importantly don't have the reliability issues of the DFP pedals. I think the current set of microsoft pedals I'm using are originally from the wheel set my dad bought 5 years ago.
I haven't used a G25 so I don't know what I'm missing, which is a good thing. Once my DFP gives me problems I'm sure I'll check prices on the G25 again.
For sure. I was just responding to the question about car vs driver. At the US National level the driving is just amazing. In a slalom, top drivers will wiggle half the cones without knocking them down, and can drive to within an inch or two of their perfect line time after time. Then it mostly comes down to who has the deepest pockets. At the local level here, you could be competitive in the 'Street Prepared' class in a Miata by spending maybe $5k on your car if you were a good enough driver. But for Nationals it appears the sky is the limit...
My experience in autocross is that a great driver with an average car can still pull off some impressive times, but an average driver with a great car can not (or can only occasionally). There are people out there who put tens of thousands of dollars into their cars for autocross and are still beaten by guys with virtually stock cars.
I don't remember which event this is from, but it's one we ran last summer. Fairly tight due to limited space on our current lot. We will soon be moving to a much larger purpose built lot so I'm sure the courses will be faster and longer...
This is one I made up myself, a little faster than some of my others, but still all 2nd gear. If you want to post your times (please provide a replay), I will add your time to my post. Lets get some competition going here!
I am getting back into autox in LFS so I figured I'd just make one thread with my layouts that I can update. All of my layouts are SCCA-style autocross layouts. Some are real layouts that my local autocross club (VCMC) has run, and there will be one or two that I've made in a similar style but that I have created myself.
Btw, you will most likely need to watch the replay for all courses as it's not always clear which way to go next!
OMG, his title isn't fashionable! How will he ever survive knowing that?
I haven't really had a good look at the games that are available (or soon will be) for the PS3 yet, but I am tired enough of the GT series that unless they do something amazing with GT5 I wouldn't be too bothered about a PS3. I have recently seen the XBox 360 on a big Plasma screen for the first time and I was very impressed with how it looked! From what I've seen the PS3 looks very good, but I don't think I'd choose it over the 360 simply for graphics.
Good job for Super Aguri (even if there is some controversy about their chassis!)...and it's not even that they were running lighter fuel load than other teams as you can run what you like in Q1 and Q2. BMW however, I wouldn't be surprised if they pit before McLaren et al, but who knows, maybe that's just genuine pace! Lets hope so, it could make for a great season.
I agree there. I have some Toyo T1S's on my MX-5 and I hardly ever brake for corners! Usually take it fairly easy on the straights and then maintain speed or even speed up for twisty sections, as that's where all the fun is for me. I do have a blast now and then on straight bits where it's safe to do so, but usually cruise along at 50-60mph and then have my fun in the corners. My friend and I do a nice half hour run of twisty roads now and then, and last time we counted, I think I only used the brakes 3 times.
Btw, my next set of tyres will definitely be of the same variety as yours Tristan...minimum grip for maximum fun. That's what I had before the Toyos and although they are fun, I think I enjoy playing around at the limit at slightly more sane speeds. Even with crappy tyres the Miata has more than enough grip. Like you mentioned Dennis, even your scion was too fast to be driven flat out on the street... Makes me want a Lotus/Westfield 11 Lots of low speed fun to be had in one of those....
I am really excited for this season because there are so many things that could happen. With so many variables with new cars and new driver lineups in all the top teams, anything could happen. How will Massa compare to Raikkonen? Will Fisi be outdriven by Kovalinen? Where will Hamilton fit into things and how close can he get to Alonso? And will any of the top teams stand out or will it be a really close fight?
That guy spinning out on his first corner on the 'ring is awesome...that's the only corner I turned off the stability control on the merc my dad and i rented while we were there. It was wet and I wanted to have a bit of sideways fun (it's one of the better ones for this as it's fairly low speed, though maybe adenauer forst is best for sideways fun). There was absolutely no weight to the steering or any feel though so correcting was total guesswork. I soon put the stability control back on But at least I didn't spin!
